Prophet Hud (Peace Be Upon Him): The Messenger to the People of 'Ad
Introduction
Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) was one of the prophets sent by Allah to guide humanity. He was sent to the people of 'Ad, a powerful and wealthy nation that had become arrogant and corrupt. They refused to acknowledge Allah and instead worshipped idols. Despite Hud’s warnings, they persisted in their disbelief, leading to their ultimate destruction by divine punishment.
The People of 'Ad
The 'Ad civilization was known for its strength and impressive architecture. They lived in a region called Al-Ahqaf, which is believed to be in present-day Yemen or southern Arabia. The Quran describes them as a mighty people:
"Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Ad—[With] Iram, who had lofty pillars, the likes of whom had never been created in the lands?" (Surah Al-Fajr 89:6-8)
The people of 'Ad were blessed with wealth, vast lands, and great physical strength. However, instead of being grateful to Allah, they became arrogant and believed that no one could destroy them.
Prophet Hud’s Message
Prophet Hud, a noble and wise man from among them, was chosen by Allah to guide them. He preached the oneness of Allah and reminded them to abandon idol worship. He warned them that their arrogance and injustice would lead to destruction.
Hud said:
"O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. Then will you not fear Him?" (Surah Al-A’raf 7:65)
However, instead of listening, the people of 'Ad mocked Hud. They accused him of lying and being foolish.
"They said, 'O Hud, you have not brought us clear evidence, and we will not leave our gods for your word, nor will we believe in you.'" (Surah Hud 11:53)
Hud remained patient and continued to warn them, but they ignored his message. They were so arrogant that they challenged him to bring Allah’s punishment if he was truthful.
The Destruction of 'Ad
Since the people of 'Ad refused to repent, Allah sent a severe punishment. At first, a drought struck their land, making them suffer. But instead of seeking Allah’s mercy, they continued to mock Hud. Then, Allah sent a mighty windstorm that lasted for seven nights and eight days, completely destroying them.
"And as for 'Ad, they were destroyed by a screaming, violent wind, which Allah imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so that you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees." (Surah Al-Haqqah 69:6-7)
Their great buildings and strong bodies were of no use against Allah’s power. Only Hud and his followers, who believed in Allah, were saved.
Lessons from the Story of Prophet Hud
- Arrogance Leads to Destruction – The people of 'Ad were powerful, but their arrogance led to their downfall.
- Trust in Allah’s Warnings – Hud warned his people many times, but they ignored him. Those who reject Allah’s message will face consequences.
- Divine Punishment is Real – The destruction of 'Ad shows that no nation is too strong for Allah’s punishment if they refuse to obey Him.
- Patience and Perseverance in Preaching – Despite facing rejection and insults, Hud remained steadfast in delivering Allah’s message.
Conclusion
Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) was sent as a guide to a proud and powerful nation, but their arrogance led to their destruction. His story teaches us the importance of humility, faith, and obedience to Allah. It serves as a reminder that true strength comes from submission to the Creator, not from worldly power and wealth.
