Prophet Salih (Peace Be Upon Him): The Messenger to the People of Thamud

Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) was a noble prophet sent by Allah to guide the Thamud, an ancient and powerful civilization that lived after the people of 'Ad. Like their predecessors, they were strong, skilled in architecture, and wealthy, but they were also arrogant and worshipped idols instead of Allah. Despite Salih’s sincere warnings, they refused to believe and eventually faced divine punishment.

The People of Thamud

The Thamud were a prosperous nation that lived in an area known as Al-Hijr, located in modern-day Saudi Arabia. They were skilled builders who carved magnificent homes into mountains. The Quran describes them:

"And you carve out of the mountains, homes, feeling secure." (Surah Ash-Shu’ara 26:149)

Despite their blessings, they became corrupt and arrogant, rejecting Allah’s guidance and challenging the truth.

Prophet Salih’s Message

Prophet Salih, who was known for his wisdom and good character, was sent by Allah to guide the people of Thamud. He invited them to worship Allah alone and warned them against their sinful ways.

"And to Thamud [We sent] their brother Salih. He said, 'O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord.'" (Surah Al-A'raf 7:73)

However, most of the Thamud rejected his message. They accused Salih of lying and mocked him, saying:

"They said, 'O Salih, you were among us a man of promise before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped?'" (Surah Hud 11:62)

They were too proud to accept the truth, even when Salih warned them of Allah’s punishment.

The Miracle of the She-Camel

To prove that he was truly a messenger of Allah, Salih performed a great miracle. The people of Thamud asked for a sign, so Allah sent them a she-camel that emerged from a rock. This was no ordinary camel—it was a test from Allah. Salih warned them to let the camel drink water freely and not to harm it.

"This is the she-camel of Allah [sent] to you as a sign, so let her feed upon Allah’s earth, and do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by a painful punishment." (Surah Al-A'raf 7:73)

Some of the Thamud believed, but most of them remained stubborn. Instead of respecting the miracle, the leaders of Thamud plotted to kill the camel. They hamstrung it and killed it, defying Allah’s command.

"But they hamstrung her and so he said, 'Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied.'" (Surah Hud 11:65)
