Prophet Ismail (Peace Be Upon Him): The Forefather of the Arabs

Prophet Ismail (peace be upon him) was the son of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and Hajar. He is a significant figure in Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. In Islam, he is known as the forefather of the Arabs and an ancestor of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). His story is one of faith, obedience, and sacrifice, teaching us valuable lessons about devotion to Allah.

Birth and Journey to Makkah

Ismail was born to Prophet Ibrahim and Hajar when Ibrahim was very old. Soon after his birth, Allah tested Ibrahim by commanding him to take Hajar and baby Ismail to a barren desert, which is now Makkah.

Obeying Allah’s command, Ibrahim left them there with only a small amount of water and food. When Hajar realized he was leaving, she asked:
"Has Allah commanded you to do this?"

Ibrahim nodded, and she replied:
"Then Allah will not let us perish."

This showed Hajar’s strong faith in Allah’s plan.

The Miracle of Zamzam Water

After a while, their water ran out, and baby Ismail began to cry from thirst. Hajar desperately searched for water, running between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, hoping to find help.

Then, a miracle happened. Angel Jibril (Gabriel) struck the ground with his wing, and a spring of water gushed forth. This became the famous Zamzam well, which still exists in Makkah today.

This event is commemorated during Hajj, where pilgrims perform the Sa’i (walking between Safa and Marwah).

The Test of Sacrifice

When Ismail grew into a strong and righteous young man, Allah tested Ibrahim with a great trial. Ibrahim had a dream in which Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son. When he told Ismail about the dream, Ismail, being an obedient son, said:

"O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient." (Surah As-Saffat 37:102)

As Ibrahim was about to sacrifice Ismail, Allah replaced him with a ram and said:

"You have fulfilled the vision. Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good." (Surah As-Saffat 37:105)

This event is remembered every year during Eid al-Adha, when Muslims around the world sacrifice an animal to honor the obedience of Ibrahim and Ismail.

Building the Kaaba

Later, Allah commanded Ibrahim and Ismail to build the Kaaba, the first house of worship dedicated to Allah. As they built it, they prayed:

"Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing." (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:127)

The Kaaba became the center of Islamic worship, and today, millions of Muslims face it during their daily prayers.

Prophet Ismail’s Legacy

  • The ancestor of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
  • Helped establish the city of Makkah with the Zamzam well.
  • Taught the people of Arabia about monotheism (worshipping only Allah).

Lessons from the Story of Prophet Ismail

  1. Trust in Allah’s Plan – Just like Hajar trusted Allah in the desert, we should always have faith in His wisdom.
  2. Obedience to Allah – Ismail accepted Allah’s command with patience, teaching us to submit to His will.
  3. The Power of Sacrifice – True faith means being willing to give up what we love for Allah.
  4. The Importance of Family Support – Ismail and Ibrahim worked together to build the Kaaba, showing the value of unity in faith.

Conclusion

Prophet Ismail’s (peace be upon him) life is a beautiful example of faith, patience, and dedication to Allah. His legacy continues through the Kaaba, the rituals of Hajj, and the lineage of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). His story reminds us to always trust in Allah, remain patient during hardships, and submit fully to His commands.
